The battle between her and the school was chronicled by Rachel Aviv in the New Yorker earlier this month. If we review your medical records, are we going to see you had broken ribs and facial injuries? He explained that Morrison had had no prior criminal record, Fierceton's complaints about her mother's boyfriend and prescription drug abuse had been unsubstantiated, her cousin had witnessed no abuse while living with the Morrisons at a time prior to the incident, and he had learned that Fierceton "had regular temper tantrums, beyond the normal range for an adolescent". I do think that it is a huge defense mechanism that people deploy. In between those placements, she slept at friends' houses for long periods. Which as Im sure youve learned since is a complete and fundamental misunderstanding of poverty . Its, in my opinion, because they get overlooked and the kids like me are kind of rendered invisible by the privileges of our biological families. Fierceton grew up in a wealthy community and attended an elite private school in a St. Louis suburb. And then to be so unanimously disbelieved and, at that point, this article was like a paragraph and a half. Why were you in the hospital that long? Mackenzie is the soap's first transgender character, added to the series after Stone wrote to executive producer Jason Herbison to pitch the character. And did they say anything along those lines? What kind of a group is that? And then throughout the now a year and a half process [laughs] of different sort of invented processes that happened, eventually the university was like: OK, I guess shes low-income. Mackenzie Fierceton, a graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania, has won the prestigious and extremely competitive Rhodes Scholarship, which will allow her to study at Oxford in November 2020. And I ended up reading the comments, and the comments were just horrendous. And I also think we have this racist and classist notion of who can be an abuser or who can cause harm. "[12] Gutmann, soon to step down from her position to serve as U.S. ambassador to Germany, had made increasing the amount of FGLI students at Penn a priority in her previous 17 years as the university's president. RG: Instead, I want to talk more about what this says about the system, that something so seemingly irrational could be produced by this system, and actually could be predicted to be produced by this system in some ways. There were some pretty basic errors, such as my name, my birth name, and my birth place, and claiming that I didnt have a sibling, that I wasnt low-income, a lot of facts that were pretty easily disputed. [2] Winkelstein, who has a Ph.D. in bioengineering and has studied injuries,[3] then proceeded to interrogate Fierceton at length about her abuse and hospitalization, in a manner that led Fierceton to believe that not only did Winkelstein doubt her story but had spoken with Morrison. This can happen to someone in my community. The lawsuit, filed on behalf of Mackenzie Fierceton claimed that Penn officials targeted the grad student for retaliation after she became a key witness in a wrongful death lawsuit filed against the university. MF: You know, I believe the first people who said that was the Rhodes Trust. MF: You know, I honestly dont know. And the chain of events that happened leading into foster care? They reported it to the state's child-abuse hotline. MF: So those questions really came later. Enough bruises? What about Rhodes? The Chronicle reports that although she spent her final year of high school in foster care, the student had grown up in an affluent suburb of St. Louis with her mother, a radiologist, and attended private schools. That is when I would trace it back to. While Kerr noted that Fierceton's three weeks in the hospital was far longer than might be expected given the bruises that led to her admission, she also noted the absence of injuries to Fierceton's back despite having reportedly fallen or being thrown downstairs. If you want to give us additional feedback, email us at. Anything in particular jump out at you after having read back over that transcript? But its relevant to financial aid and the student should check whatever box is going to give them most access to financial aid, which would be yes to both questions. I asked specifically about those boxes and the answer I got was again, this was multiple years ago, but it was something along the lines of I dont think that biological parents are relevant to this. [Laughs.]. Our concern is instead with the conduct of our. And I ultimately didnt end up responding because I got a serious threats from Penn that if I didnt withdraw that they were going to come after my undergrad degree, and launch proceedings to revoke my undergrad degree, and never give me my M.S.W which I was supposed to graduate with in May 2021, I have not yet received that diploma if I didnt withdraw from the Rhodes and sign an NDA. And we have our own specific grad school definitions. But part of it is funding decisions. Im curious, having dealt with so many people along the way, who are questioning your story, how do you feel like the boxes play into this? So Im not sure if it was Penn who reached out to her or vice versa, which I think is also an important question in all of this. The prosecutor eventually dropped the charges and the arrest record was expunged. How much research has been done on the foster-care-to-prison-pipeline? I identify with the FGLI umbrella term and definitely being a low-income student, but Ive never really called myself a standalone first-generation. And that dynamic, I would say, [laughs] probably played a big part in all of this. [2], One day in September 2014, she told the history teacher about Lovelace's abuse. The reporter had assumed based on her status as a FGLI student which stands for first-generation, low-income that she had been poor her entire life. And so they had to see some benefit to them in doing this. [i] Ruderman corroborated that later to The New Yorker, saying she was paraphrasing Fierceton's self-identification as FGLI. "[2], When Fierceton returned to the St. Louis area on vacations and breaks, she stayed with friends. How old were you when you were applying to college? Michael Hayes, who had prosecuted Morrison, told the Chronicle that "The more I learned, the less certain I became about what really happened. "She lies better than I can tell the truth. And Im glad that people are having the kinds of systemic discussions that are so key to all of this. 24-year-old Mackenzie Fierceton won the Rhodes scholarship in November 2020, but a tip-off to the prestigious committee kicked off a deeper investigation into the student's background. And it became pretty clear to me that they had spoken to Carrie and or seen medical records. We started building this, and this is exactly who we built it for. Also, there was a delay in getting the Penn Police there because they didnt know where the building was. was truthful, Rafaelle feared that Penn might share its information with the government and if the U.S. Attorney decided to pursue a prosecution, it would be likely to last a long time and consume much of her attention. So therefore that doesnt fit their understanding of low-income, despite the fact that your mother was no longer your legal guardian, youre a ward of the state. But in this application they had two questions which are to determine financial aid. But I think a lot of it stems from the current policies and practices of federal and local funding and what kind of programs theyre funding for kids. [2] Morrison's bond was originally set at $40,000, but lowered to $5,000 over prosecutors' strenuous objections. Like there is more attention to systemic poverty and trying to keep children in their homes to begin with, I would say, which is important, because if you can keep kids in their homes, then theyre not in the system and facing that foster-to-prison pipeline. When asked what she might have done differently, Fierceton told the Chronicle that while she had at some points wished she had never applied to Penn, and later considered rephrasing some of the things she wrote on her essays and applications, "[w]here I've landed is that I have a right to write about my experiences as I experienced them. And then I remembered that my teacher had told me to write a gratitude list. And I dont remember exactly what their statement was, but they disputed it. ", However, in its report, Penn notes that Fierceton had, in an essay (which it allows may not have actually been submitted) for her application for a travel, The Rhodes report acknowledged her documentation of an email she wrote to a reporter at the, Penn's investigation noted that even if Fierceton had been referring to the Chesterfield police rather than the. Fierceton was released after four days. Like you said, I was called into a meeting. [22] It went into greater detail about her past, providing more substantiation for her abuse allegations from teachers, fellow students and their parents, Carrie Brandt (the police detective who had investigated and arrested Morrison) and her allegations that Morrison had enabled Lovelace's sexual abuse. Uh, my lawyer. But I think a lot of it stems from the current policies and practices of federal and local funding and what kind of programs theyre funding for kids. But those definitions arent anywhere to be found. Like what does Penn say when you tell them: Hey, the Penn official who helped me fill this out said that these are the categories that I fit. "Without her trauma, she didnt matter", wrote a commentator in the Tulane Hullabaloo. Theyre not on a website. RG: Yeah. And I dont remember all of the questions, but it was a really intense, rapid fire of really difficult and challenging questions. "[b] She considered running away but had a distant relationship with her father, and nowhere else she believed she could go. And its no offense its not like the most profound . And Im like: I dont know what else I could give them that would possibly convince them if their belief is as a 15-year-old, 16-year-old was journaling about my experience of abuse and hiding it in an air vent, and it was actually secretly all a plan to like accuse my mother of abuse and go into foster care so I could have a sad story. I mean, youd been taking loss after loss, despite having the facts on your side. One of them, to me, felt pretty clear that it was probably from someone in my biological family, because it had photos of me; it had very specific information that very few people would have and I dont think many people would have random childhood photos of me. And what happened after that? But it did open with these literary elements of what I was feeling like, and the experience I was having in those moments. [2][5] It did not disclose that it had done so until March. Penn filed a 130-page response two weeks later, denying all her allegations of wrongdoing and saying that the university officials and co-defendants who had investigated the case were unaware of the Driver lawsuit when they did. And youre getting instruction from a university official that that's how you're supposed to fill it out, that's what the definition says online. And I suspected that it was about this anonymous email. Its practically half of Americans, or more. Mackenzie Fierceton (born Mackenzie Terrell on August 9, 1997; later Mackenzie Morrison, [1] : 63-64, 86 ) is an American activist and graduate student currently studying at Oxford University. Aviv tells the story of Mackenzie Fierceton, a former student at the University of Pennsylvania. [2], Brandt noted that Morrison never asked about, or expressed concern for, her daughter's well-being. The article by reporter Rachel Aviv was called How an Ivy League School Turned Against a Student, and it tells the story of an extraordinary battle between Mackenzie and the University of Pennsylvania. The university, in its response to Mackenzies lawsuit, referred to Mackenzies mother as an accomplished physician and claimed that a court had found her allegations not to be credible. And then there was this other foster sibling who was the biological kid of the foster parents I was staying with, and spelling it out in that way. I think they have said, well, theres different definitions and the dean who is the dean of the grad school said: Well, thats not our definition. I took photos of the building and sent it to them, and I was connecting them with different people who were in my class, who were in his class. She told them she felt that would be more likely to get an unbiased answer that way. How many people kind of fit that category that you interacted with, and how many kind of fit closer to your category, not just in your own interactions, but also in your research? Joining is simple and doesnt need to cost a lot: You can become a sustaining member for as little as $3 or $5 a month. Like I just havent, really, there to be a lot of information about me publicly. Its a very under-researched field. or in graduate school. And she ended up responding right away, and asked to get on a phone call. She wasn't poor and grew up in a wealthy household with a successful mother. A college counselor suggested she apply through QuestBridge, a nonprofit that helps qualified students in need find schools that will give them full financial support. And Im glad that people are having the kinds of systemic discussions that are so key to all of this. So yes, I know that is me. You didnt grow up in crumbling projects your entire life. MF: Yeah. And I think psychologically one way people feel safer about it is to say: No, that happens to other people. RG: Mhmm. Her sister also wrote White as well, alleging that Fierceton "deliberately tried to frame Carrie and planted 'evidence' around the house, including her own blood. Youre engaged in a lawsuit with Penn. Is that just an interpretation or did they say anything that suggested to you that the fact that you had gone to a private school and grown up in an upper-middle-class situation meant that you could never at any point consider yourself low-income? Medical records, records from child welfare services, corroborating letters from detectives and lawyers and elementary, middle, and high school teachers, childhood friends, professors basically everyone who had known me. Fierceton said later that she had never used the word "poor" to describe herself or her childhood. Detective Carrie Brandt, who had been planning to follow up on the hotline report at Whitfield that day, instead interviewed Fierceton at the hospital. Penn claims that was meant purely for purposes of the program, to attract as many students as possible who could benefit from participation in it. I didnt even really think about it when I checked it, because I felt like I had a lot of information that backed it up. If you speak, Im going to disconnect you from the call. And thats actually one of the things that, if there was any doubt whatsoever about this story, in some ways it was settled by that. And she was shocked. And even now, The New Yorker quotes a lot from my childhood journals describing my abuse. Our theme music was composed by Bart Warshaw. Now anyone who earns that distinction is to be commended, but the article also noted that Mackenzie had aged out of foster care . And I told them I only have a half-hour, because Im working, Im in class, and were going to go through all of this. "[2], That feeling was not mutual, Fierceton came to suspect. In the transcript, I wrote it was really just focused on: What happened the night you went into foster care? Mackenzie Fierceton described herself as s a "queer,. And I was actually really nervous about doing any press for this reason. We dont have ads, so we depend on our members 35,000 and counting to help us hold the powerful to account. One, Michael Raffaele, said he believed Morrison was trying to leave Fierceton with no other options. And at the time I was like: Why what? But once I got out of the hospital and I learned that information, I remembered that a classmate had died in the same basement about 16 months earlier. But it doesnt mean you were always low-income, just that you are now. Its a very under-researched field. RG: I think for a lot of us, we have to sort of other poverty and abuse and put it in a box, partly, to protect ourselves. In addition it offered details of what its own investigation had concluded about Fierceton's childhood and adolescence that led OSC to believe it was likely that she had exaggerated or fabricated outright her claims about her mother. Morrison had told the admitting physician that she had not been present when her daughter was hurt but believed she had fallen down the stairs in the house, which the hospital accepted as the likely cause, even though her fearfulness was also noted. So I could imagine why at some point youd be like, you know what, Im just not going to keep taking Ls here. Mackenzie Fierceton was championed as a former foster youth who had overcome an abusive childhood and won a prestigious Rhodes Scholarship. Like, it seemed like an airtight case from my perspective. RG: And one of the main things they pointed to was that she had gone to this private school . [14], The publicity led 150 Penn students to stage a walkout from classes to demonstrate in support of Fierceton. And so, just the immediate reaction was like: Theres no way. Fierceton responded that that showed the university's "vulnerability and desperation". "[1]:119, Dismissal of mother's charges and expurgation of records, Role in wrongful death suit against university, In its response to Fierceton's suit, Penn quotes Fierceton as telling police as soon as they entered her hospital room after her later injury about her diary and that it would tell them everything they would need to know. Penn's Office of Student Conduct recommended withholding her master's degree until she paid a fine; both conditions were dropped but a notation about the investigative finding remains in her transcript. You know, I honestly dont know. [Laughs.]. [4] It took nearly an hour, during which Fierceton seized intermittently and never completely regained consciousness, for her to be taken to the hospital. I do think that it is a huge defense mechanism that people deploy. Did you go into foster care?
